Colorful Chair Anyone?

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

It’s January. The holidays are over and the end of winter is so far down the tunnel, it’s hard to see the light. What better way to brighten up a day than with some vibrant hand-painted furniture? While you couldn’t have pieces like this chair everywhere in a home, having one as an accent might be perfect. It’s the kind of idea I look at and think I could do that … and then reality sets in and I realize I should just contact an expert like Lisa Frick. Frick, who sells her goods on Etsy, paints tables, chairs and everything in between. Check it out.

The New American Home at IBS 2012

Monday, February 6th, 2012

This is The New American Home a project built every year in conjunction with the NAHBs International Builders Show in Orlando, Florida.  The 4,000 square-foot home collected eight green building certifications, including LEED Platinum and NAHB Emerald, and is expected to consume 52% less energy than a standard home of similar size.  Plus, a 4.0 kW solar array provides about 18% of annual energy needs.

For the record, TNAH received or qualified for NAHB Emerald, LEED-H Platinum, Energy Star, Indoor airPlus, Florida Green Building Coalition Platinum, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Designation, Florida Water Star Gold, and the DOEs Builders Challenge.

In many respects, TNAH was built for energy efficiency.  The blower door test measured 0.35 air changes per hour at a negative pressure of 50 Pascals solidly in Passive House territory for this one measurement.  To minimize air leakage, spray foam was used on the underside of the roof deck and around penetrations and framing.

Elsewise, TNAH has heavily insulated ICF exterior walls, low-e coated and argon-filled windows, an Energy Star roof covering, an 18 SEER air-source heat pump system, sealed ductwork, a solar hot water system, Energy Star appliances, and LED and CFL lighting.

TNAH is completely geeked out with an energy management system to shift energy usage to off-peak periods, full home automation and control by smartphone or tablet, motorized exterior solar screens and interior privacy shades, a home security system with mobile control, and a central vacuum system that vents debris to the outside.

The New American Home was designed by Architecture by Phil Kean, LLC and built by Phil Kean Designs, Inc.  At 4,181 square feet, its one of the smallest TNAH projects in many years and could very well be the greenest.  The home has six bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, a gallery and bar, a lanai and pool, and a three-car garage.

kinda genuis: to-go lids to help you reuse glass jars

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Just today I was feeling glass jar guilt. I saw a page in the new MSL that suggested we use them to store things like pre-chopped garlic and unused onion halves, and I thought, oh, I’ll never be that organized. I save a lot of glass jars, but except for firefly catching in the summer, they don’t get much use. This supremely clever item at Uncrate, called the Cuppow, could help me be a much more practical recycler. It’s a reusable top that acts like a coffee cup lid. Of course, pouring hot liquid into a glass jar is not the smartest way to consume your joe (ouch!) but it could be great for lemonade and iced tea in the summertime. Stick

Five Green Home Trends for 2012

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Theres something about the beginning of a year that makes the fortune tellers come out in droves.  But I guess its fun to ponder and pontificate about the future to string data together to predict what will happen in the next 365 days.  Buildipedia took a shot at identifying green home trends for 2012, and here are the five that they list:

#1: Renovation Nation with home construction still on the decline, it makes sense to renovate what you already have.

#2: Smaller Footprints if building new, less square footage translates into materials and labor savings, not to mention cost savings based on heating and cooling a smaller space.

#3: Net Zero not just generating as much energy in a year as is consumed but net-zero water could become a topic of conversation next year with droughts.

#4: Energy Monitoring Systems with prices going down, it could be a good time to examine real-time energy data on your iPhone, iPad, or computer.

#5: Residential LEDs technology has come a long way with better pricing, more output, and warmer light colors.

Well share a few other perspectives, but what do you think well see in 2012?
