How To Dispose Of The Old TV

We wrote last month how we decided to replace our Hitachi rear projection LCD television.

Why?

Well, its light bulb had gone one more time (the third time for us) and we didnt want to pay almost $400 to purchase a replacement light bulb.

Not when we could purchase a new Sony 40 inch Bravia LCD HD television with 1080P. Here it is pictured in our family room. Yes, I know I need a new TV stand to match!

As well, the new LCD TV uses less electricity than the rear projection TV making it more environmentally friendly.

As well, it is much, much more quite.

Now what?

Aside from the obvious challenge of actually moving the huge old Hitachi TV, how to get rid of it? Here it is placed in my home office waiting for its final disposition.

In the old days we would simply place it out on the curb on garbage collection date if we couldnt find a repair shop who wanted it for parts.

Not any more.

Yes, we did try Kijiji but had no takers for the Hitachi TV.

So, what about the store where I purchased the new Sony TV? Since they are in the home electronics business surely they should know where I could take the old television.

They did.

It was them.

I mean, all I needed to do was to take my old TV back to them and they would see that it was properly disposed.

Neat!

Now, sure, they might bake a buck or two from selling the parts.

But I just wanted that non-working TV out of my home office.

So, yesterday with my other daughter home from college I had her help me put the old Hitachi in our mine-van and I drove it to the same Best Buy location which sold us our new Sony HD TV.

They took it no muss no fuss.

And it didnt cost me anything.

Here is where you can read more about Best Buys recycling services.
